Terms of use
Last updated: 19 October 2026.
1. What butohworld is
butohworld is an international agenda of butoh events. Anyone can read it. Organizers can publish their events, with or without an account, and connect a calendar or a feed so that their events appear on their own. Listing an event is free, always, and nobody can pay to appear higher or more often: every event is shown in the same way (see our How it works page).
2. Who can publish
You can publish an event if you are 18 or older and you organize it, or you act for the person or space that does. The site is open to people anywhere in the world; these terms apply the same wherever you are. By publishing you confirm that what you write is true to the best of your knowledge, that you have the right to publish it, and that the images you add are yours or you have permission to use them.
3. Your event, your responsibility
What you publish is yours. butohworld does not organize, sell tickets for, or guarantee any event. Sign-up, payment and any question about an event are between you and the people who attend. We are not a party to that relationship.
If an event changes, is postponed or cancelled, update it: people may have travelled for it. The site asks you for a short note whenever you change the status of an event, and sends that note to the people who follow it.
4. What you allow us to do with your content
So that the agenda can work, when you publish you grant butohworld a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, reproduce, display, translate and distribute the content of your listing (its text and images) on butohworld.com and through the ways the site shares events: the calendar feeds (ICS), the structured data that search engines read, the email digests and alerts people subscribe to, the one-click reminder to you, the social media posts of butohworld if you tick that option in your account, and the sites that partner with butohworld to share listings.
The licence lasts while your event is on the site. When you delete an event, or it is deleted, the licence ends, except for copies kept in backups for a limited time (see the Privacy policy) and for what others may already have received through the feeds, digests or social posts.
You keep every other right. We will never sell your content, and we will never use your description or your images outside the purposes above.
5. Facts are free; words and images are not
The facts of an event — what it is, who teaches or performs, when, where, how much it costs, how to sign up — are published as open data: anyone may reuse them, with a visible credit to butohworld and a working link to the event. This is what the site declares to search engines and to other readers (including automated ones) through its machine-readable licence.
The description you write and the images you add are not open data. They stay yours, under the licence in section 4 only. Anyone who wants to reuse them has to ask you.
The agenda as a whole — the collection, its checks and its organization — belongs to butohworld.
6. Translations
People who help translate the site do so for free and are credited on the Credits page. By sending a translation you grant butohworld a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use it on the site. These legal texts are published in English and Spanish, and both versions are equally valid.
7. How the site works, in plain terms
- Without an account, you publish by confirming your email. The link in that email lets you edit or delete the event for 90 days and can be renewed from the event page. Keep that email; the link is personal.
- With an account, you publish without the email step, keep your events in one place, and can connect a calendar or a feed. Events that come from a connected source are changed in that source, not here.
- Moderation. New listings pass an automatic check. What looks fine is published; what looks doubtful waits for a person to look at it; what looks like spam or abuse is held. We may edit a listing to fix an obvious mistake, or remove it if it is not a butoh event, is not real, breaks these terms or the law, or someone with a better claim to it asks us to. Nothing is sold to or bought from anyone in this process.
- Deleting. You can delete your events at any time. A deleted event answers “gone” to anyone who had its link; for 90 days the site’s administrator can restore it, then it is gone for good. Deleting your organizer entity deletes all your events and your data (see the Privacy policy).
- Social media. Events are posted on butohworld’s Facebook and Instagram only if you have an account, the event has an image you added, the automatic check passed it, and you have that option on. You can turn it off at any time.
- If we hold or remove your listing, we tell you by email which rule it broke and how to reply, unless the law forbids it or it is plain spam. If you think we got it wrong, write to us: a person reviews it.
- Reporting illegal or wrong content. Anyone can report a problem with a listing from the event page, or by email to the address in the Legal notice, saying which listing and why. We read every report, act on it when it is justified, and tell the person who reported, if they left an email, what we did. Reports made in bad faith, repeatedly, may be ignored.
8. Donations
butohworld is free and has no ads. If you want to support it, you can donate through Stripe. A donation is not a payment for any service, does not buy any visibility, and is not refundable. butohworld does not issue invoices.
9. No warranty, and limits
We work to keep the site accurate and available, but it is a volunteer-run agenda: it may be down, an event may be wrong, and we cannot promise otherwise. To the extent the law allows, butohworld is not liable for losses that come from relying on a listing, from an event not taking place as announced, or from the site being unavailable. Nothing here limits the rights you have under Spanish or EU consumer law.
10. Changes and law
We may change these terms; the date at the top says when. If a change affects what you allowed us to do with your content, we will tell organizers with an account by email before it applies. These terms are governed by Spanish law. Disputes go to the courts of Collado Villalba (Madrid), Spain, unless the law gives you the right to your own courts, as it does for consumers in the EU. The European Commission’s online dispute platform is not available for this site, because nothing is sold here.
